Advanced Ceramics | Horsehair & Naked Raku Firing
Raku is one of the most exciting and dramatic firing techniques. Join us, as we explore two adaptation of this ancient art form, Naked Raku & Horsehair Raku.
What is Naked Raku Firing?
In Naked Raku, we introduce a thick slip on the ware and glaze over the slip to hold it in place. The glaze and the slip crack while the vessel is rapidly heated in the gas kiln, and smoke penetrates the cracks and tints the clay, creating a remarkable black smokey web on the surface of the vessel.
What is Horsehair Raku?
This technique uses horsehair (and sometimes feathers) to create decorative markings on vessels, which are rapidly heated in the raku kiln and then remove while still hot.
Preparing for the Raku Firing
Please note, a fair bit of preparation will be required to participate in this workshop.
A) Vessels
First and foremost, you will need to make your vessels! We highly suggest using a white clay body that can withstand intense thermal shock. We suggest using the following clay bodies:
◦ Clayworks LGH
◦ Walkers Special Stoneware
◦ Keanes White Raku
Please note, other clay bodies have not been tested and may crack due to the extreme thermal shock of the firing process.
Each participant will have the opportunity to fire 2-3 vessels. Vessels can be either wheel-thrown or hand-built and must be no larger than a grapefruit (max width 10cm, max height 20cm).
B) Terra Sigillata
Terra Sigillata must be applied to vessels when they are bone-dry and then the vessels must be burnished. We will have Terra Sigillata available at both studios, and you will be contacted via email with instructions once you have booked in.
Terra Sigillata is an ultra-refined clay slip that can give a soft sheen when applied to bone-dry wares.
C) Bisque Firing
Vessels must then be bisque fired prior to the workshop.
Additional Information
All participants must wear enclosed shoes, long sleeves, and long pants. Natural fibers only, please. No synthetics or poly-cotton blends. Clothing must be tight-fitting (no flowing shirts, and absolutely no dresses). Long hair must be tied back. During winter, please be sure to dress warmly.
The workshop is suitable for anyone from beginners to experienced ceramic artists, looking to add a new skill and knowledge to their repertoire.
Please note, this workshop is WEATHER DEPENDANT. If there is a chance of rain, or if the winds are too strong, the workshop will be postponed. We will notify you the day before the workshop if the weather is deemed unsuitable for firing.
